  • Port Jervis Free Library to hold dedication ceremony for historic painting

    Thursday, March 15, 2018 att 2:00PM

A historic oil painting was recently donated to the Port Jervis Free Library by Robert Eurich, owner of the community-oriented PortJervisNY.com website.  The oil painting on canvas is titled At Port Jervis and attributed to artist, John Howitt (New York; 1885-1958) depicts an overlooking view of Port Jervis in autumn with only the roofs of houses and the golden tops of the trees in sight.

A formal dedication of the Howitt painting will take place on Thursday, March 15 at 2:00PM at the library.  All are welcome to attend.
Artist, John Newton Howitt resided in Port Jervis with his wife Bertha from 1939 until his death in 1958.  He painted pictures for advertisements, covers for pulp novels and leading magazines.  The library’s display case this month showcases some of these works.
Our library is fortunate to now own three John Newton Howitt historic paintings.  Two of the paintings are in the children’s room on the second floor of the library and the newest acquisition is on the first floor in the fiction room.  The Howitt paintings will grace the walls of the library for years to come and will be enjoyed by all who enter the building.
For more information please call the library at 845-856-7313.

Construction @ the Library

New Roof for the Library

Please excuse our appearance while we are under construction at the library. The library roofing project has begun as the construction company sets up the scaffolding around the perimeter of the building. Please be extra careful as the scaffolding does protrude out onto the driveway where cars are traveling. The scaffolding also covers the sidewalk on the driveway side, making it unusable for pedestrians, so please be careful when walking from the back parking lot and around the scaffolding. Some of our library parking spaces in the back of building are also unavailable due to materials being stored in the back parking lot. Thank you for your continued patience during construction.

When visiting the library, please park only in the designated Library Parking Lots or on Pike Street.

Persons parking in the VA Health Clinic or Orange County parking lot behind 150 Pike Street will be subject to ticketing and towing at the owner's expense.  We appreciate your cooperation.
